Much smaller and more manageable than the city of Cancun - which is about an hour's drive away - it has a cool and laid back vibe, with stylish bars, shopping boutiques and elegant hotels. Playa del Carmen boasts a beautiful stretch of white sand beach which slopes down to warm Caribbean sea waters and which comes alive at night with cool beach clubs and bars. Originally a small fishing village, Playa del Carmen has in recent years become one of the top holiday destinations on the Riviera Maya. It boasts excellent scuba diving conditions and is just a short boat ride away from the beautiful little island of Cozumel. There is some stunning wildlife to be seen in the local area - The Xcaret Ecological Park and the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve are especially worth exploring. Playa del Carmen is also well placed to explore the stunning Mayan ruins of the region. Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza are all must-see destinations in the region.
