Destination Protaras is located on the eastern coast of Cyprus and enjoys gorgeous views out over the Mediterranean sea. It fronts onto the famous Fig Tree Beach - a feature that has turned Protaras into one of the most popular resorts in Cyprus in recent years. The beach faces out to a little rocky island which tourists will often swim up to and sunbathe on. There are a number of other blue flag beaches nearby and there are excellent water sports facilities in the region, including parasailing, speed boating, jet skiing, water skiing and banana boating.

Despite its great popularity, Protataras retains a relaxed and family friendly atmosphere that the neighbouring resort - Ayia Napa - has largely lost. It boasts an attractive centre with great shops and historic buildings as well as some fantastic, traditional Greek taverns - which serve delicious seafood dishes - lively karaoke venues and sports bars. There are a number of fascinating attractions in the area including Cape Greco - a great snorkelling destination - and the enigmatic 'ghost town' of Verosha, which is just a 40 minute drive away. Not to be missed is the church of Profitis Ilias which is situated on a hilltop just outside town and richly rewards the arduous climb with stunning views of the coastline.
For Singles

When: The peak season in Eastern Cyprus is between June and August when temperatures can often soar north of forty degrees and when the sunbathing conditions are at their best. If you're looking to meet other travellers and enjoy some revelry, head out then.

Where: Protaras is just a quarter of an hour's drive from the party town of Ayia Napa and can make a good base for enjoying its fantastic nightlife whilst still enjoying a peaceful time on the beach during the daytime. There are also numerous bars in Protaras offering ample opportunity to socialise.

Why: Cyprus boasts some of the best climate anywhere in the Mediterranean. This is a great destination to top up your sun tan whilst trying out some water sports and making new friends!

For Groups

When: Head to Protaras between June and August and enjoy stunning temperatures. Alternatively, if you're looking to use Protaras as a base from which to hike in the stunning landscapes of the region, you might prefer to come during the autumn or spring months.

Where: Many visitors to Protaras find no reason to look any further than Fig Tree Bay. It's a gorgeous stretch of golden sand and is the ideal destination for a beach holiday. In the evening, catch your team in action in one of the sports bars or embarrass yourself in a karaoke bar!

Why: Because the Mediterranean Sea has entranced visitors for centuries with its clear blue waters and pristine sand beaches. This is a great destination for spending a peaceful time away with friends and offers the added bonus of the odd night out in the infamous resort town of Ayia Napa!

For Couples

When: Head to Protaras in the midsummer months for a lovely holiday of lazy days on the beach and evening drinks in seaside bars as the sun dips below the horizon. If you're up for a bit more peace and quiet, try visiting in September once the peak season has come to an end.

Where: Rather than spending your days on the Fig Tree Bay, which can become a little crowded in the summer months, try venturing round the coast to one of the other blue flag beaches in the region. You could make the short walk to the pretty Konnos Bay - a pleasant coastal route in the morning and late afternoon.

Why: Because the Mediterranean's status as one of the most romantic places in Europe is well established. It is a great destination to enjoy a relaxing and rejuvenating holiday with the one you love!

For Families

When: Young children might find the midsummer months almost unbearably hot. Temperatures can get as high as forty degrees and preclude most energetic pursuits. Protaras is a great destination for the Easter holidays, by which time it is already hot enough to spend your days on the beach.

Where: The Cape Greco is a great place for the whole family to enjoy some snorkelling. Alternatively, you could make the short drive around the coast to see the fishes in the Ocean Aquarium. Kids will love the water sports available on Fig Tree Bay including banana boating and pedaloes.

Why: Protaras is a lovely resort for family holidays. It offers lots of entertainment and porting pursuits for visitors of all ages and is much more peaceful and less nightlife-orientated than many other Mediterranean resorts.

Weather The climate in Eastern Cyprus is amongst the finest anywhere in the Mediterranean. There are a staggering 340 days of sunshine a year and the temperature rarely drops below twenty degrees. In the summer months, daytime temperatures are well over thirty and can often stray into the forties meaning that it can be too hot to do much more than lounge on the beach with a cocktail! Though it does tend to get a bit colder and wetter during the winter, it rarely rains for very long and the temperature can be great for more strenuous outdoor pursuits, like hiking around the coast or inland to the pretty little villages.

Meanwhile, groups of friends can enjoy swimming in the clear blue, warm waters of the Mediterranean and working on their suntans on the beach. Whilst not packing the same punch as nearby Ayia Napa, Protaras has its fair share of fun nightlife with excellent little tavernas and karaoke and sports bars.
